AMAS // the best and worst dressed of the 2016 American Music Awards

Hey Babes!

As you all probably know, or if you didn’t, you found out this morning, the 2016 American Music Awards aired last night.

At any award show, there’s a lot going on. Between the red carpet entrances, to the speeches, to the performances, to the actual awards, there’s no telling what will happen. Remember when Taylor Swift got interrupted at the Video Music Awards in 2009? Or when Nicki Minaj threw shade at Miley Cyrus at the 2015 Video Music Awards?

Fortunately, or unfortunately, however you view it, there wasn’t anything too intense at last night’s AMA’s, but there were still some pretty memorable moments.

As a fashion student, and fashion lover in general, what’s worn on the red carpet is included in those memorable moments. There’s also a 90% chance that we’re going to have a class discussion on who was wearing what, so I should be paying attention anyway.

Not that I’m complaining, because the celebrities making their did not disappoint, well besides the handful that made you scratch your head at their outfit. Pantsuits/jumpsuits, cowboy hats, sheer, and all-white garments seemed to be a trend this year too, which was interesting to see.

After every award show, best and worst dressed lists come out, a long with highlights and suspicions. I’m sure E! and other celebrity gossip sites were writing their articles before the show was even over.

I’ve decided to make my own best dressed and worst dressed list from last night’s show. It was hard to do, but I was able to put together my top five and bottom five.

Best Dressed:

  1. Gigi Hadid
Designer: Robert Cavalli

This dress is definetly number one on my list, because I could totally see myself wearing it. The off-the shoulder silhouette makes her look like a bohemian goddess about to get married.

The pattern looks gorgeous on top of the sheer fabric, the length makes it look so elegant, and the fringe on the edges just adds to the elegance.

Gigi, I can forgive you for your awkward opening monologue, because your red carpet entrance was stunning.

  1. Selena Gomez
Designer: Prada

You can almost never go wrong in a red dress, it’s a classic. The way it’s fitted at the top and flows into a gown makes her look like a princess, all she needs is a crown.

Selena also proves that you don’t have to show a ton of skin to look amazing, and she still looked amazing after giving an emotional acceptance speech. You go girl.

  1. Spencer Ludwig

To be completely honest, I don’t really know anything about this guy, but his outfit stuck out to me because it’s not the same tuxedo style outfit that men usually wear at these events.

Polka dots aren’t something that you see a lot of men wearing either, and this kid rocked them while staying stylish in a black cowboy hat and round sunglasses.

I personally would’ve gone with black shoes too, but the gold stands out, so you do you Spencer.

  1. Lady Gaga

I could never wear an all-white outfit because I’d probably spill coffee on it within the first 10 minutes, but Lady Gaga is killing it.

She’s also the only female rocking the cowboy hat trend, and she’s even rocking it better than some of the males.

Covering up everything except a little bit of cleavage gives her a more seductive look too. Work it.

  1. Nial Horan

I knew Zayn went solo, but I had no idea Niall did too until a couple of weeks ago.

Regardless, I would expect him to a have a pretty good sense of style after being in a boy band, and he didn’t let me down.

The matching trousers and blazer look really classy, and it was a good choice pairing it with a white dress shirt and white pocket square.

Niall, were you trying to impress Selena Gomez? It’s ok if you were.

Worst Dressed:

  1. Heidi Klum
Designer: Wolk Morais

I love everything about Heidi Klum, in fact Project Runway is one of my favorite shows, but this outfit just isn’t doing it for me.

This may just be the lighting, but the way the light reflects off of the garment makes it look like it’s made from a cheap leather material.

I think the print is a lot of the reason I don’t like look though, it looks like a fish tried to paint itself. It would be a lot more flattering if it was two pieces instead of one.

I’m sorry Heidi, but it looks like you’re out.

  1. Z LaLa

Like Spencer Ludwig, I didn’t really know who this was either, but unlike Spencer Ludwig, her outfit stuck out to me in a bad way.

Remember when Lady Gaga would wear extreme outfits, like the meat suit? Well this reminds me of something like that worn for Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video. The hair also makes her look like a futuristic Malefecient, but a little too futuristic.

I have a feeling that she’ll tone it down a little once her name has been out there for a while though.

  1. DJ Khaled
Screen Shot 2016-11-21 at 9.05.09 AM.png

This isn’t me being biased because I got annoyed with DJ Khaled after watching his snapchat stories, but this might be me being biased because I hate when patterns are mixed.

I’ve probably stated it several times in previous posts, but I like when things match, and mixing patterns is one of my biggest pet peeves.

But, that aside, this just looks like something you would wear before or after a workout, not to an award’s show.

Congratulations DJ Khaled, you played yourself.

  1. Ciara
Shoes: Giuseppe Zanotti

I’m a fan of Ciara, but not so much a fan of her outfit. The turtleneck is great, the black and white ruffles are great, but when they’re combined, it’s not so great.

It’s just an odd combination, and the hemline at the top of the skirt looks a little strange too. Either half could have looked really good if they were paired with something else instead of paired together.

  1. Lauren Giraldo
Screen Shot 2016-11-21 at 9.16.20 AM.png

The detailing is really pretty, and the color is really pretty, but the train in the back makes her look like a ring master at the circus. Maybe that’s the look she was going for, but I’m not a fan.

Also, I think a bodysuit without anything underneath it or over it looks kind of awkward, unless you’re a dancer. If that sheer material was somehow made into a skirt instead of a train, I probably would have liked it more.

Of course, there were many more looks that I liked and didn’t like, but if I didn’t cut it down I would be keeping you here all day. Although my favorite look overall was definitely Gigi Hadid’s red carpet dress, but I can’t decide on a least favorite.

What was your favorite look? Your least favorite? Did anyone surprise you? Let me know in the comments!

dress well. eat well. live well.
