Guide // the top 8 foundations

Hey Babes!

We all know how tough it is to find the perfect foundation. The wrong shade can leave you looking too pale, too dark, or even orange. Not to mention that some formulas are oily, drying, hard to blend, or leave your skin looking blotchy by the end of the night. Also, a lot of formulas may have ingredients in them, like chromium and lead, that are bad for your skin. Swatching, testing, and reading reviews of all the foundations out there would take hours, But what if I told you you could read about the top 8 foundations all in one place?

I recently came across a foundation guide that researched 737 foundation formulas and narrowed them down to the top 8, which include three liquids, two powders, and three drugstore brands. To get this list, all formulas with heavy metals, formaldehyde releasers, retinoids, pore-cloggers, and simple alcohols were cut from the 737. These substances are bad for your skin and not something you would want in a good foundation.

Formulas with fragrance as an ingredient and/or SPF were also cut from the list. “Fragrance” is a general term that can have other ingredients in it and it may cause allergic reactions, and SPF isn’t helpful unless it’s SPF 30, and even then, you have to use a lot of it. Some other factors that caused a foundation to get cut from the list were an average shade range and unhygienic packaging.

After narrowing down the list, 22 foundations were tested on several people. According to the guide, “the best held up with flawless, breathable coverage through rainy Seattle days and nights, while the worst dried out skin and became flaky or clumpy.” And from those reviews, the top 8 were selected.

They are:

I’m a big fan of Kat Von D, so I was super excited to see her Lock-It liquid and powder foundation on this list, and even though I haven’t tried it yet, I think I’ll be picking it up at my next trip to Sephora. Although, I do happen to happen to have the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Finish, so I was excited to see that on the list as well. The Pro Finish gives great coverage and a great matte finish, and it looks so natural!

I found this guide really helpful, it was nice to see someone go so in-depth on foundation research. I also learned a lot of new things, like the kinds of harmful ingredients that are put into a lot of foundation formulas.  What did you think of this guide? What’s your favorite foundation? Is it on this list?  Let me know in the comments and be sure to check out the full guide at
