Easter Sunday is right around the corner, and among all the egg hunts and chocolate, is a nice formal church service. I grew up going to church, I didn’t have the best experience, but I always remember everyone, including my mom, sister, and I, dressing up for the sermon on Easter Sunday. If there’s one day that non-church goers decide to try out a church, it’s on Easter Sunday, and there’s no shame in that.
Last year, I went to a sunrise service at Sea World that was hosted by our local Christian radio station, and I wore this maxi romper from Ross.
Whether your a member of a church or just going as a once a year thing, you’re going to need a dress. Below is my top five picks that would be perfect for an Easter church service.
If you aren’t that big on dresses themselves, you could totally go with a maxi romper like I did. Maxi rompers are kind of like mullets, they’re short in the front, and long in the back. The difference between a maxi romper and a hi-low dress though, is that maxi rompers actually have shorts in the front, not just a skirt. Party in the front. Business in the back.
This maxi romper from Kohl’s would be great for Easter, because it’s floral and the color palette is light, making it perfect for spring. The ribbon around the waist also clenches your mid section, giving you shape and making your waist appear slimmer.
This dress is pretty casual, so if you want to be a little more formal, you can wear a blazer or cardigan. If it were me, I would wear one that stops right above the waist, because that and the ribbon together will give your body even more shape and make your waist appear even smaller than just the ribbon itself.
There’s also another style of this dress that is black with white pin stripes and flowers, but for Easter, I definitely like the white version. Good news though, because BOTH of them are currently on sale for $39.99
If you haven’t hopped on the Target bandwagon, what are you waiting for? Target is one of those places where you walk in and see everything you didn’t know you needed in your life, like this floral midi dress.
The good thing about this dress, is that it has a square neckline, so it’s not too low cut and won’t show too much cleavage, making it great for church. If your large chested, v-necks can sometimes show too much cleavage, even if you don’t mean for it to. I know my sister has this problem, so she has to be careful with what she wears to places where you have to dress modestly, like to her Bible study.
The other thing that is nice about this dress, is the fact that it is knee length, so you don’t have to worry about wearing too short of a skirt. When I was little, I was really tall for my age, so everything looked shorter on me than it was actually made to be. It made it really hard shopping for school. With this dress, you definitely won’t have that problem, but it is spaghetti strapped, so you might want to wear a white blouse under it, or, if that seems too casual, you can wear a white cardigan. Light blue or red/pink would work too, but I think white matches the best.
Unlike the first two, this dress is long sleeved so you don’t have to worry about covering tank top straps if you think it’s inappropriate for a church service. But, it is a v-cut dress, and it’s pretty deep, so if you want to cover cleavage, you could wear a cami or a bandeau under it. I think red or black would look really good, but since it’s a white dress, you could pretty much wear any color. I have a gold bandeau that would look really good as well. The only problem with a white dress, is that it can stain easily, so just be extra careful if you decide to eat or drink in it.
If I were to accessorize this dress, I would wear this red bandeau under it with these red shoes, and this red bag. By making the accessories all red, it adds a pop of color to the white. If you decide to go this route, either with red or another color, make sure that the shades don’t clash
If you want to be modest, but don’t have undershirts or cardigans to dress a piece up with, try to go for something like this floral mini dress from NastyGal. It goes down to your mid-thigh, and has long sleeves that don’t show your bare shoulders. The neckline also goes up to your collar bone, and while there’s a small cutout that’s top and center, it definetly doesn’t show as much skin as the other three dresses, and it’s probably the most modest one on this list.
This piece also comes with a belt around the waist, and like I mentioned with the dress from Kohl’s, it will give your waist more shape and make you appear slimmer. If you have broad shoulders though, you might not want to wear this, because the neckline and puffed shoulders with ruffle details will elongate your shoulders and draw attention to them.
If none of the dresses above suit you, you might want to go for something a little more spring-y, like this orange floral fit and flare dress. It’s a great color for spring, and, you can wear it on more than one occasion, like to class. The ‘fit and flare’ design cinches your waist while making your legs look slimmer as well. And, the neckline isn’t plunging, so you don’t have to wear anything under it if you are worried about showing too much cleavage.
